This is something I started writting for the Bioware forum that I eventually want to expand into a tactial doctrine FAQ. I welcome your contribution since I cannot claim not to be the greatest tactician of the group here.

The Way of the Clergy.

Tactics for the Cleric.

It’s tough to talk about cleric tactics without addressing where you fit in the party. I’m assuming you know enough to not try going out alone. But what job do you do?

Blaster of Offensive spells – Sorceress/Wizards will do that better With Air/Magic you have some offense but not compared to dedicated arcane artillery platforms.
Melee – Fighters, Barbs, Paladin do that better.
Recon – Rogue, bards, druids, rangers and monks will do that better. You are the last person who should be doing this until you get invis and detect traps.
Ranged Weapon – Archer Bards/Rangers/Rogues will be much better than you at this.

Don’t try to do any of these jobs better than the specialists. You’re much better off helping them shine at what they are made to do. It will make them feel essential to the party. And party building is the key to success.

For Example:

Your party gets to a new dangerous area, Do you all go running through it looking for trouble?

No – you should gather your party, then buff and send out the recon team – usually Rogues and possibly Rangers and Druids.

Your recon team has discovered enemy spell casters – Do you attack with your morning star or shoot your sling at them, or shoot offensive spells – No, You cast silence (level 2) on that big dumb half-orc barbarian and let him run up and bash them. He’s not going to use spells and with silence on him unless they have a silent spell memorized / silent dispel memorized neither will the spell casters. Once the Barb has reduced the enemy spell caster to a red pulp you can heal whatever trivial damage they did to him.

Note: I’m not saying that you should play this way or that this is the most effective/best way, but this has been the most fun for me to always strive to make the other people in your party feel essential to the party and not do their jobs but help them do their jobs better. They will begin to trust your tactical sense and you will get a feeling for how best to use everyones skills - This is true tactical leadership.

HEY! I take offense to that remark! LOL! JK!

Coral, my big dumb half-orc barbarian misses partying with your cleric. You definately played the cleric the way it was "meant to be played" in my opinion.

Too many clerics are all gung ho about harm... that gets rather tiring... though it can come in handy sometimes in a pinch.

Good post! But I suspect there is an evil cleric out there that may not agree. We'll see.

There has never been a need for a recon team in all my time on dyso...

Shows how criminally underused everything is.

Thanks for the compliment not_so_unique what is your in game name? I must admit I don't use harm much (I don't think I've harmed anything so far icon_smile.gif.

I find it to be a life saver to have a rogue scout out ahead of the party when we are over our heads in an unknown area. This might be because we have bitten off more than we can chew.

In unknown areas I buff the rogue/scout first and ask him to scout ahead while I buff up everyone else in the party.

Is that what Silence is for? Amazing! Now I know what to do with that stack of scrolls in my pack. Thank you for that little hint. I'm sad that I've never had the chance to travel with you. It seems like I could learn a lot.

With Silence It's nice to cast it on your own party members (Big dumb Barbarin half-orcs/Rogues) rather than the enemy casters because it won't fail if it is resisted. If he has to go through some enemy troops on the way a sancutary (level2) spell can be a nice touch.

River, I'd probably learn more from you but you're welcome to party with me.

heh, well i just made a combo that maxes out at level 17 that has a 35 harm touch legally with only story items, i am not telling, while the time passes, as always, the people loose their skills and i will come back in full glory later on and kick it up a notch, then we'll be rollin' once again.... just wait for about a month or two... heh. icon_evil.gif

I'm not the greatest tactician here. I'm trying to talk about a philosophy or way of playing that will maximize the fun of other people. I welcome others to suggest better tactical tips.

Part II

Clerics Working With Rogues:

As a cleric I really like working with rogues. Rogues are good at all the things my clerics stink at. Clerics only get 2 skill points per level. These go to Spellcraft and Concentration. This means I'm no good at finding traps, opening chest. picking locks, moving silently or doing any recon work at all. So I ignore these skills totally and just try to have a rogue in every party I play in.

How do you play with a rogue? You buff them first and let them scout ahead for you. It may look cowardly but rogues don't like a noisy cleric up front with them, disturbing the monsters and setting off traps.

In character I find that rogues are usually the first to find out information. I think it's because they play inquisitive types. I try to pay rogues cash whenever they give me a piece of fresh information. I also ask rogues to spy for me and seek out a piece of information for me. I try to reward them as best I can.

Did you know clerics has a nice spell called "Find Traps"?
It's kinda good to use against traps, not only does it find the traps but it disarms them as well, (if your high enough lvl)

Yes find traps has a bug in it. When I use Find Traps, it disarms all the traps it finds. I don't use it because I think it's an exploit. It makes a mockery of rogue skills. It will probably be fixed in the next patch.
