Hey. Anyone else play a Ranger on here?
I was looking around trying to spread some gold to the merchants, and I didn't see any Ranger-specific gear. Is there a secret Ranger tree house somewhere in the lost woods? I get lost everytime I go in there, so I rarely visit. If anyone is looking for item ideas or whatnot, maybe a Ranger-specific themed gear package: i.e. shortsword, dagger, light armor with hide bonus, camo-colored, some archery-boosting gloves (since archer rangers are actually worse than fighter, rogue, bard archers) matching helmet, etc.

The only way I had fun with Raisthenal was making him Ranger 12/Fighter 8. That gave me plenty of Feats to play with. This way, along with starting with a 16 STR and DEX, I made him excellent with hand-to-hand AND a bow (Focus, Specialization, and Imp.Critical with both). You can choose to beef up STR or DEX as you level to focus on either the melee or ranged, but I'd recommend DEX because you need Light Armor for Dual-Weild to work, and the Padded Armor called Armor of Fleetness gives you Haste, freeing up your boots (it's a +3 to AC, useable at L15). I used a 2-bladed sword because I figured a Ranger would like something that's kind of like a Quarterstaff, and this took advantage of his dual-weilding capability. He also had Cleave and Knockdown (but not Imp.), and Dodge and of course Rapid Shot and Point Blank Shot, and some others.
One Caveat for now, though: until 1.31 comes out and they fix Point Blank Shot, you're ranged attack will absolutely SUCK at anything other than the highest levels. So I'm not redoing him until then.
I'm also thinking of maybe focusing a little less on the melee thing and mixing in a little Arcane Archer with Wizard instead of Fighter....Rangers are awesome, because they're so versitile! |

According to the PHB, double weapons are not allowed for the Ranger dual-weild feats. Is this different in NWN?
Regardless, I am a Halfling, so I cant use them anyway. |

I wouldn't have used one if it didn't work!
Ah, didn't know you're still playing a Halfie. I'd say that a Shortsword/Kukri would work best (Kukri's are Tiny Weapons). Wicked-bad Crit Range with a Keen Kukri! |

Actually, right now I am leaning to either short sword/dagger or dual dagger. Exotic feat is a waste for me right now. |

I understand that that can be tough, but think of it like this:
1. With a Keen Kukri with Imp.Crit., your Crit Range is 12-20.
2. With a Shortsword/Kukri combo, you're doing Piercing *and* Slashing. One reason why I like my Human Rogue/Ranger creation to dual-weild Morningstar/Handaxe - then I get all 3 damage types! |

Yeah, I dont have two spare feats for the kukri. Dagger in the offhand does just fine for the cost. |

What's that supposed to mean? That rangers get Dual Wield feat, but they are not allowed to use two weapons?
Would someone please shed some light on the subject?
And I only use one shortsword with my rogue. Wasting three feats just to get two extra attacks is not my idea of fun. |

They can use any two-sided weapons as if fighting with the two-weapons feat. They essentially get Ambidexterity and Two Weapon Fighting for free, provided they wear nothing heavier than light (pretty sure, might be medium) armor.
Now personally, I love rangers. They are a pure RP class. Sure, their spells aren't great, but cool none the less. I like them a lot! |

At Ranger Level 1 one gets a Ranger-specific (meaning no other class gets this) Feat called "Dual-Weild". Dual-Weild grants the EXACT same benefits as having both the Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting Feats. However, in order to get these benefits, one must be wearing Light Armor or less (Padded, Robes).
Also, at the Ranger Level 9, one gets the Improved Two-Weapon Fighting Feat for free. |

RANGERS Suxx0rZ,
honestly wahts the point in being a ranger? I don't get it.....i mean you could take 9 fighter levels and get Two WEp,Imp two wep, and Ambi, all right in there....I don't understand..And Rangers are supposed to be great Archers but they have no Bonus with the Bow whatsoever...Rogues make better archers...and a wiz/rogue/arcane archer with SoU seems more of a sensible combo that a ranger.... |

I agree with Glorin, the Ranger Suxzorz. I suppose it is a great roleplay class, but useless in my opinion. |

Fighters don't get spells though. They also don't get favored enemy (undead is the way to go! ) Rangers also get a LOT more class skills than fighters do. Not to mention, have a lot more role play value too. |

....
10!!!!!!!!!!!!
edit: but you win on rp value though |

That's why I Dual-Class Ranger/Fighter, Z. Being able to Specialize in my two-handed sword AND bow, or my Morningstar, Handaxe, and Bow, rocks.
Glorin and Red, shut up. Or I'll put you out on the Range. With the Cows. |

I like playing rangers from a pure role playing point of view. But when I indulge my inner power gamer I realize that unless the mod makes areas that allow rangers to take advantage of ranger tracking/outdoors/ranger-specific-items/animals-to-commune-with benefits then there is not too much advantage to rangers.
What would rangers like to see in a mod?
Ranger specific bows, light weapons and light armor.
There is little reason to go 20 classes of ranger, Maybe make some rare items that require over 9 levels of ranger. Perhaps make a very good thing that requires 20 Ranger levels.
Items that boost little used ranger skills / spells.
Lots of animals in the woods. Animals usually arn't very powerful or worth taming, maybe make some more powerful animals for rangers to use as pets. |

Dyso actually has several items that rangers use which are really good....
I obtained them all through a Dm event before moved.... really good stuff when combined a ranger would be almost unbeatable when useing it
as for the animal thing I am I totally agree, modules need good animals for druids and rangers to tame |

Remember Animal empathy works on more than just animals; beasts and magical beasts are also inculded in that skill. You can dominate things like manticores, grey renders and such with that skill. Rangers are good in my opinion for specialized characters such as a "dragon slayer" or a "bounty hunter" Those favored enemy feats can really come in handy sometimes. Personally I like a Ranger/fighter/rogue combination with a primary weapon being a bow then something like rapier/kukri, or even dual kukris in melee. It's all about the criticals, especially with those favored enemy damage bonuses. Well, there's my little piece on Rangers. |
